Description:
The second edition of Introduction to Partial Differential Equations, which originally appeared in the Princeton series Mathematical Notes, serves as a text for mathematics students at the intermediate graduate level. The goal is to acquaint readers with the fundamental classical results of partial differential equations and to guide them into some aspects of the modern theory to the point where they will be equipped to read advanced treatises and research papers. This book includes many more exercises than the first edition, offers a new chapter on pseudodifferential operators, and contains additional material throughout. The first five chapters of the book deal with classical theory: first-order equations, local existence theorems, and an extensive discussion of the fundamental differential equations of mathematical physics. The techniques of modern analysis, such as distributions and Hilbert spaces, are used wherever appropriate to illuminate these long-studied topics. The last three chapters introduce the modern theory: Sobolev spaces, elliptic boundary value problems, and pseudodifferential operators.

Donald Knuth's influence in computer science ranges from the invention of literate programming to the development of the TeX programming language. One of the foremost figures in the field of mathematical sciences, his papers are widely referenced and stand as milestones of development over a wide range of topics. This volume assembles more than three dozen of Professor Knuth's pioneering contributions to discrete mathematics. It includes a variety of topics in combinatorial mathematics (finite geometries, graph theory, enumeration, partitions, tableaux, matroids, codes); discrete algebra (finite fields, groupoids, closure operators, inequalities, convolutions, Pfaffians); and concrete mathematics (recurrence relations, special numbers and notations, identities, discrete probability). Of particular interest are two fundamental papers in which the evolution of random graphs is studied by means of generating functions. Description:
In this monograph, Joachim Baumann provides in-depth coverage of essential research issues; namely, mechanisms for locating and terminating mobile agents and for orphan detection in a mobile agent system. The reader will gain insights into the design and implementation of three control mechanisms for use in mobile agent systems: the energy concept, the path concept, and the shadow concept. The author examines these mechanisms and offers a solid argument as to why they would be better choices over existing mechanisms with respect to message complexity, migration delay, and availability. All in all, this book is an outstanding contribution to advancing the science of mobile agents and it will help the community better understand how to tame mobile agents.

Description:
This is a genuine introduction to algebraic geometry. The author makes no assumption that readers know more than can be expected of a good undergraduate. He introduces fundamental concepts in a way that enables students to move on to a more advanced book or course that relies more heavily on commutative algebra. The language is purposefully kept on an elementary level, avoiding sheaf theory and cohomology theory. The introduction of new algebraic concepts is always motivated by a discussion of the corresponding geometric ideas. The main point of the book is to illustrate the interplay between abstract theory and specific examples. The book contains numerous problems that illustrate the general theory. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It contains sufficient material for a one-semester course. The reader should be familiar with the basic concepts of modern algebra. A course in one complex variable would be helpful, but is not necessary. It is also an excellent text for those working in neighboring fields (algebraic topology, algebra, Lie groups, etc.) who need to know the basics of algebraic geometry.

Description:
In this sequel to the well-received Trickster's Choice (Random, 2003), Pierce deftly weaves an unforgettable story about Alianne (Aly) of Pirate's Swoop. As the novel opens, the wife and children of the late Duke Mequen Balitang return to the capital city of Rajmuat from their exile on their distant estate. Aly has become a maid to Lady Dovasary, daughter of the late duke, and, more importantly, she is now the spymaster of the raka rebellion that is determined to put Dovasary's sister on the throne in place of the four-year-old luarin king. The light-skinned luarin have oppressed the dark-skinned raka for centuries, and the luarin co-regents now in charge of the Copper Isles are losing their grip on reality as well as on their kingdom. With Aly in control, the raka rebellion is able to stir up enough unrest to cause the uprising to begin. Aly, who is the daughter of Alanna the Lioness of Tortall (from the "Lioness Quartet" series), is delightful in her deviousness. The teen is exceptionally brave, sassy, and diplomatic. She is surrounded by a large supporting cast, which is well developed and necessary to the story. The plot sweeps readers along in a whirlwind of court intrigue, deception, murder, and romance. The humor is wicked, and the plot twists will keep the pages turning to the supremely satisfying end.

Description:
The first part is a full exposition of the abstract foundations of Grothendieck duality theory for schemes (twisted inverse image, tor-independent base change,...), in part without noetherian hypotheses, and with some refinements for maps of finite tor-dimension. The ground is prepared by a lengthy treatment of the rich formalism of relations among the derived functors, for unbounded complexes over ringed spaces, of the sheaf functors tensor, hom, direct and inverse image. Included are enhancements, for quasi-compact quasi-separated schemes, of classical results such as the projection and KГјnneth isomorphisms. In the second part, the theory is extended to the context of diagrams of schemes. This includes, as a special case, an equivariant theory for schemes with group actions. In particular, after various basic operations on sheaves such as (derived) direct images and inverse images are set up, Grothendieck duality and flat base change for diagrams of schemes are proved. Also, dualizing complexes are studied in this context. As an application to group actions, we generalize Watanabe's theorem on the Gorenstein property of invariant subrings.

Description:
This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop at which major Parallel Lisp activities in the US and Japan were explained. Work covered includes Multilisp and Mul-T at MIT, Qlisp at Stanford, Lucid and Parcel at Illinois, PaiLisp at Tohoku University, Multiprocessor Lisp on TOP-1 at IBM Tokyo Research, and concurrent programming in TAO. Most papers present languages and systems of Parallel Lisp and are in particular concerned with: - Language constructs of Parallel Lisp and their meanings from the standpoint of implementing Parallel Lisp systems; - Some important technical issues such as parallel garbage collection, dynamic task partitioning, futures and continuations in parallelism, automatic parallelization of Lisp programs, and the kernel concept of Parallel Lisp. Some performance results are reported that suggest practical applicability of Parallel Lisp systems in the near future. Several papers on concurrent object-oriented systems are also included.

Description:
The notion of an operad supplies both a conceptual and effective device to handle a variety of algebraic structures in various situations. Operads were introduced 40 years ago in algebraic topology in order to model the structure of iterated loop spaces. Since then, operads have been used fruitfully in many fields of mathematics and physics. This monograph begins with a review of the basis of operad theory. The main purpose is to study structures of modules over operads as a new device to model functors between categories of algebras as effectively as operads model categories of algebras.

Description:
One need not be an equine lover to appreciate Anderson's sweet contemporary romance centering on fiercely honest horse rancher Samantha Harrigan and handsome neophyte veterinarian Tucker Coulter, who meet while trying to protect a horse from its abusive owner. Samantha has always cared deeply for her horses, so when they suddenly fall ill, she's distraught; when it turns out they've been poisoned, she's horrified, immediately suspecting that her violent and vindictive ex-husband is the culprit. Unfortunately, the authorities are pointing fingers at Samantha, alleging that she plans to defraud her insurance company. Wary of letting a new man into her life, Samantha nevertheless recognizes that she must call on Tucker to nurse her horses back to health. As he tends to the horses and grows closer to Samantha, Tucker becomes her confidante and champion, realizing that the only way for Samantha to save herself is to catch the offender before the police arrest her. In Samantha, Anderson has created a strong and gentle heroine, and a cast of family and friends proves charming throughout. This smart, wholesome tale should appeal to any fan of traditional romance.

Description:
Infinitesimal analysis, once a synonym for calculus, is now viewed as a technique for studying the properties of an arbitrary mathematical object by discriminating between its standard and nonstandard constituents. Resurrected by A. Robinson in the early 1960's with the epithet 'nonstandard', infinitesimal analysis not only has revived the methods of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities, which go back to the very beginning of calculus, but also has suggested many powerful tools for research in every branch of modern mathematics. The book sets forth the basics of the theory, as well as the most recent applications in, for example, functional analysis, optimization, and harmonic analysis. The concentric style of exposition enables this work to serve as an elementary introduction to one of the most promising mathematical technologies, while revealing up-to-date methods of monadology and hyperapproximation. Audiences: This volume is intended for classical analyst seeking new powerful tools and to model theorist in search of challenging applications of nonstandard models. This is a companion volume to the earlier works on nonstandard methods of analysis by A.G. Kusraev and S.S. Kutateladze (1999), ISBN 0-7923-5921-6 and Nonstandard Analysis and Vector Lattices edited by S.S. Kutateladze (2000), ISBN 0-7923-6619-0

Description:
In this enlightening and highly rewarding hardcover text, David L. Goodstein, Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, offers serious students a much needed "overview of the study of matter, and a feeling for those concepts that are applied with more or less success in all the various fields" of science. Focusing his survey on "the macroscopic world, from the atom up rather than the nucleus down," the author consistently emphasizes areas where the fruits of research are likely to be applicable in other disciplines. This broad orientation makes States of Matter a valuable adjunct to the study of chemistry, geology, engineering and applied mathematics, as well as physics. Beginning with a chapter covering thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, Dr. Goodstein then proceeds to an in-depth discussion of the three basic states--gases, solids and liquids--a few special states and, finally, phase transitions. Perfect gases are discussed in terms of the ideal gas, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, slightly degenerate perfect gases, electrons in metals and the Bose condensation. Coverage on solids includes heat capacity, normal modes, crystal structures, crystal space and electrons in crystals. Additional chapters describe the structure of a fluid, potential energy, interacting gases and liquids; superfluidity, superconductivity and magnetism; Weiss molecular field theory, the van der Waals equation, scaling laws and other pertinent aspects of phase transitions. Many helpful, illustrative problems appear at the end of each chapter; annotated bibliographies further guide the student who wishes to delve more deeply into the subject. Unabridged, corrected Dover republication of the edition first published by Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1975. Preface. Annotated bibliography and problems at end of each chapter. 154 figures. 4 tables. Preface

Description:
About the Author Prof. Dr. Torsten FlieГџbach (*1944) habilitierte sich 1977 an der Technischen UniversitГ¤t MГјnchen in Theoretischer Kernphysik. Seit 1979 ist er Professor fГјr Theoretische Physik an der UniversitГ¤t Siegen. FlieГџbachs Lehrbuchreihe zur Theoretischen Physik umfasst die folgenden vier BГ¤nde: o Mechanik (Band I) o Elektrodynamik (Band II) o Quantenmechanik (Band III) o Statistische Physik (Band IV) Diese Lehrbuchreihe wird durch das Arbeitsbuch zur Theoretischen Physik von Torsten FlieГџbach und Hans Walliser ergГ¤nzt. Das Arbeitsbuch fasst die zentralen Aussagen der vier Gebiete in kurzen Repetitorien zusammen und prГ¤sentiert MusterlГ¶sungen zu den in den LehrbГјchern gestellten Aufgaben. Auf vergleichbarem Niveau bewegt sich FlieГџbachs EinfГјhrung in die Allgemeine RelativitГ¤tstheorie (5. Auflage 2006).

Description:
The first aim of this book is to describe recent work on the problem of boundary conditions in one-loop quantum cosmology. The motivation is to understand whether supersymmetric theories are one-loop finite in the presence of boundaries. The second aim of the book is to present a recent, entirely new study of the singularity problem for space-times with torsion. The book is written in self-contained form. In many cases problems have been initially formulated in the simplest possible way, and finally presented and solved at increasing levels of complexity. Readers will find here a detailed and updated study of quantum cosmology, its motivation, and application to perturbative quantum gravity. Moreover, this is the first book which enables the reader to learn techniques used in classical gravity and quantum cosmology. The second edition adds new material to both the text and the bibliography.

Description:
This important book presents a unified formulation from first principles of the Hamiltonian and statistical mechanics of metallic and insulating crystals, amorphous solids, and liquids. Extensive comparison of theory and experiment provides an accurate understanding of the statistical properties of phonons, electrons, and phonon-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in elemental crystals and liquids. Questions are posed along the following lines: What is the "best" theory for a given property? How accurate is a good theory? What information is gained by a comparison of theory and experiment? How accurate is a good experiment?

Mississippi, 1951: The last place any sane man wants to visit is Thebes State Penal Farm. Of the few who make the journey there, even fewer return. But when an old friend disappears inside Thebes, ex-marine and Arkansas State Police Sgt. Earl Swagger takes a personal interest in the case. As he infiltrates the prison, what he experiences defies his wildest nightmares -- a savage world where death is the only salvation.
